- The call
- Open the door by hand and it drifts back down on its own, a little at first and then all at once. Nothing is broken that you can see, but the springs along the tracks look tired, rusty and slightly sagging.

Choosing the right spring is a matter of weight, not colour. Extension springs are rated for the weight they are meant to lift, and the correct pair for your door is found by weighing the door itself with the opener released, then checking that figure against the wire size, coil diameter and length of the old springs. Paint colour on the end coil is only a hint; older springs fade, get overpainted or were never quite right to begin with. A pair matched to the measured weight gives a door that holds at half height and lifts with one hand, and an opener that works lightly.

Extension Spring Replacement · Nantyr Park

Scene 1
The question the industry's own inspection checklist asks of every extension-spring door is whether each spring has a cable running through its centre, anchored at both ends. The technician checks for it on both sides, then checks its condition: a cable that is frayed, kinked, anchored to a loose screw or simply tied off to the hanger is not doing its job. Doors installed decades ago often have none at all, and doors that had a spring changed by a previous owner sometimes have one side fitted and one forgotten. Fresh containment cables go on with the new springs, and their anchor points are set into solid framing so that a spring which breaks stays on its cable.
Scene 2
Each lift cable starts at the bottom bracket, where its loop goes over the pin or is secured with a clevis pin. From there it runs up the vertical track, over the fixed pulley at the front of the horizontal track, back along the track to the pulley on the end of the spring, around it, and forward again to the S-hook or adjusting clip at the front hanger. The technician keeps the cable seated in each pulley groove and makes sure it passes on the correct side of the containment cable and the track. Cables are renewed if the old ones showed any fraying or rust, and always as a pair of the same length.
Scene 3
You can confirm the springs are still doing their share without going near them. With the door closed and nobody in the opening, pull the opener's red release cord so the trolley lets go of the door. Lift the door by its handle to roughly hip height and take your hands away. A door on good springs stays about where it is; if it sinks to the floor the springs have weakened, and if it rises on its own they are pulling harder than the door weighs. Either way it is a call rather than a job for you. Reconnect the opener the way your manual describes, usually by running it once.

Manufacturers dab a colour on the end coil to indicate the spring's weight rating, which is a handy starting point. It is not the final word: a faded or repainted end coil tells you little, and the pair on an older door may have been a near match rather than the right one. The technician treats the colour as a hint and confirms the rating from the door's measured weight and the spring's own dimensions.
Whether the springs run along the tracks or sit above the door; whether one is broken, hanging loose or just looks stretched; whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway and level or crooked; roughly how wide and tall the door is and what it is made of; and whether there is a cable running through each spring. A photo taken from inside with the door closed answers most of that at once.
Three things. Spray the springs, pulley axles and hinges with a garage-door lubricant twice a year, which slows rust in an unheated garage. Keep the threshold clear of bins and packed snow so the door never stops short with the springs still pulling. And leave the opener's force setting where the technician put it, since a door that starts needing more push is a balance question rather than a dial to turn.
