Springs Openers Doors

Garage Doors in StroudThe bang you heard
at seven this morning.

A torsion spring letting go sounds like something fell in the garage, and then the door refuses to lift. If that happened in Stroud today, we bring the matching spring, replace it as a pair when the door has two, check the cables and bearings beside it, and rebalance the door before we leave.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 35 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 35% of homes in Innisfil were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.A mixed housing stock means some doors are on their original openers without photo-eyes while others have modern units with apps and keypads. We handle both: upgrading the older ones for safety and quietness and adjusting or expanding the newer ones as the household grows.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 90% of homes in Innisfil (2021 Census).Detached houses commonly have attached two-car garages with a wide double door, which is a heavy door on a pair of torsion springs. Spring and cable work on these doors is done as a matched set so the door lifts level and the opener carries only its intended load.

Off-Track Garage Door Reset

The call
One side of the door hangs a hand's width lower than the other. A steel cable is drooping in a loop beside the track instead of running tight to the drum, and the whole door looks tilted in the opening.

Anatomy of a garage door

ScaleNot to scale

Spring size is chosen by measurement, not by guess: wire thickness, inside diameter, length and the door's weight all matter. The services in this group start with those measurements so the new spring matches the door rather than the old part.

  1. Part 1The panels

    Garage Door Panel Replacement

After an overnight freeze the door stuck to the slab, the opener strained, and something gave. The bottom section is bowed inward, one hinge has torn free of its screws, and the rubber seal along the bottom no longer sits flat.

  2. Part 2The springs

    Torsion Spring Replacement

Looking up at the coil above the door, you can see a clean split with a gap of several centimetres between the two halves. The rest of the spring looks fine, but the door has become almost impossible to move by hand.

  3. Part 3The cables

    Garage Door Cable Replacement

The door went up as usual this morning, then stopped a third of the way with one corner higher than the other. It is wedged at an angle in the opening, the opener is humming, and nothing you press will move it.

  4. Part 4Tracks and rollers

    Garage Door Roller Replacement

One of the little wheels along the edge of the door has a chunk missing, another sits crooked in its hinge, and there is a fine grey dust on the floor under the track where plastic has been wearing away.

  5. Part 5The opener

Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair

The motor runs, the chain rattles along the rail, and the door does not move a millimetre. You notice the little carriage sliding back and forth on its own.

Garage Door Safety Inspection. On bright afternoons the door goes down a metre, stops, and climbs back up while the light on the opener blinks.

Things people wonder

Will the track have to be replaced?

Often not. A track that is simply out of plumb, spread at the lip or loose on its brackets is re-formed and re-fixed. Replacement is for rail that has been crushed, kinked or torn by an impact, because a roller passing a tight spot will pop out again. The technician measures the damaged length against the door's roller size and tells you which case you have before any track is ordered or cut.

How do worn rollers affect the opener?

An opener is built to guide a balanced door, and every wheel that binds, wobbles or grinds adds resistance it has to overcome across the whole travel. It works harder, runs hotter, and may trip its force limit or reverse partway through a cycle. After roller replacement the technician confirms the door holds its own weight with the opener released, then checks the opener's force setting and its reversal on a test block, since a door that moves freely often needs those settings reduced.

What gauge of hinge does my door need?

Gauge runs backwards: a larger number means thinner steel. Light single doors often come with 18-gauge hinges, 14-gauge is the heavier standard for most residential doors, and 11-gauge is commercial stock. A heavy insulated double door, a door used many times a day, or a door whose hinges keep cracking benefits from the thicker option. The technician matches or improves on what was fitted, provided the width and hole pattern suit the stiles.

Should the track be lubricated?

It depends on the door, and manufacturers disagree, which surprises many people. Some want the track kept clean and dry, since lubricant there can collect grit and let the wheels skid instead of roll, wearing the roller and the track edge; others specify lubricant at the track bend. The moving parts, roller bearings, hinge pins and springs, get their own lubricant either way, in the type the manual specifies, with a few cycles of the door to spread it.
